
Beyond goodwill and promises—urgent needs and opportunities to accelerate the fight against tuberculosis in Brazil

Brazil’s already-difficult path to tuberculosis (TB) elimination was aggravated by the COVID-19 pandemic and an overlapping substantial increase in poverty between 2018 and 2022. Progress toward milestones made before the pandemic was compromised or halted. In 2021 alone, 5074 deaths by TB were reported in the country, a 12% increase compared to 2019. This is the first time since 2002 that more than 5000 TB deaths have been reported.
