
Ebola disease caused by Bundibugyo virus in the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Uganda: Update 17 May
GOARN Operational Support Team would like to provide partners with a short update about ongoing activities in response to Ebola disease caused by Bundibugyo virus in the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Uganda.

On 16 May 2026, the WHO Regional Office for Africa convened the first partner coordination meeting to brief partners on the evolving epidemiological situation and ongoing response activities in the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Uganda.
Earlier today on 17 May, the Director-General of WHO determined that the Ebola disease caused by Bundibugyo virus in the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Uganda, constitutes a public health emergency of international concern (PHEIC).
GOARN Operational Support Team is actively supporting coordination efforts through the WHO Incident Management Support Team in HQ, and is working closely with other response pillars. We anticipate greater clarity in the coming days regarding the areas in which GOARN partner institutions may be requested to support the response.
